For the first in 10 years, the event won’t be hosted by Stephen Fry, with Joanna Lumley set to assume MC duties, so there’s a a bevy of reasons to want to tune in to the proceedings – and whether you’re plonked out on the couch in front of the TV, or want to stream on-the-go using a mobile device or computer, it couldn’t be easier to watch the 2018 BAFTA Awards live.

Pokemon GO Battle Raid Group Reported In Police Log

Pokemon GO players have been accidentally getting into trouble since the game launched. From driving recklessly to gathering in parks after closing time to crossing into crime scenes; there have been tons of documented cases of players stumbling into trouble with the law. That has died down a good bit in the game’s second year, but it looks like groups of players are still causing the occasional disturbance according to this police log…

The police log is from a Melrose, MA newspaper and describes a scene that is all too familiar to any Pokemon GO player who frequently completes Battle Raids. Cars full of players flock to a park or public statue that is usually ignored by the community and the nearby locals get spooked and call the cops. It may sound silly to call the police just because people are showing up at a park, but we’ve seen it happen in person multiple times.
Here’s a look at the police summary of the incident…

Luckily, it sounds like the cops recognized that this was just a group of Pokemon GO players and didn’t take any further action. These kinds of incidents were far more common in the game’s early days, but the release of Battle Raids, and especially limited availability Legendary creatures, has led to more groups of people playing in the same location at the same time.

As long as players don’t break any park rules and only raid while the parks are open to the public, there should be no reason to worry, even if the locals are angry about a group of “adults playing Pokemon GO.”

The evolution of the 360 dunk, from Gervin to Vince and beyond

When did we first become so mesmerized by a basketball player spinning in mid-air?
Dennis Smith Jr., Victor Oladipo, Larry Nance Jr. and Donovan Mitchell took the floor and competed in the 2018 NBA Slam Dunk Contest for All-Star Saturday night, and two of the best dunks of the night were 360s. A dunk that has grown and evolved with the game of basketball continues to have its legacy carried through the years.
By now the 360 dunk has become a staple in playgrounds, rec centers, high school gyms, and college stadiums around the world, but it wasn’t always that way. Instead the torso-contorting slam was a phenomenon that caught fire in the mid-to-late 1970s before falling prey to human creativity.
The year is 1976
It’s the very first ABA Slam Dunk Contest, and it’s being held during halftime of the 1976 ABA All-Star Game. The competition featured NBA legends: Julius ‘Dr. J’ Erving, George Gervin, Artis Gilmore, and David Thompson.
Gervin’s full body mid-air rotation was the first the world had ever seen during a dunk contest. Unfortunately, he missed the finish:

Thompson succeeded where Gervin couldn’t. He took one dribble along baseline, vaulted into the air off two feet then twirled his body midair before finishing with two hands. The crowd went wild. The dunk contest announcer called it “a twist-around, patented slam dunk.”

From there, “twist-around” slam dunks took off, but with a new name: The 360. The Dunk Contest had been postponed from 1976 until 1984. When it returned, several of its contestants 360’d their way to high scores.

Terence Stansbury may have very well been the first player to pull off the 360 dunk off one foot in 1985, also known as The Statue of Liberty dunk.

In 1986, ‘Nique brought the 360 back, but this time with just one hand while keeping the same brute force he threw his windmills down with. The result was a perfect 50.

So did Spud Webb, the 5’7” (on paper) ball player known most for his serious rise. No one his height should be able to do the things Webb did. He made everyone feel like they, too, could jump into the sky.

Then came Vince Carter

They don’t call Carter Half Man, Half Amazing for no reason. There’s a list of explanations for the nickname, one being his absolutely sensational performance during the 2000 NBA Slam Dunk Contest.
Carter revitalized an All-Star event many felt was dying until he picked it back up, yelled “Clear!” and resuscitated it back to life. The dunk that put the world on notice was his very first of the night: a reverse 360 windmill.

Carter spawned a new era of creativity. There was more than just a windmill, just a tomahawk, just a 360-degree twirl in midair. No, now you could combine two of those sequences midair to form never-before-seen dunks on the biggest regular season stage of the year.

In 2002, rookie Jason Richardson went up against Gerald Wallace, Steve Francis, and then-reigning champion Desmond Mason. Richardson didn’t only win that dunk contest, but he repeated in 2003. He became known as the king of 360 dunks shortly after, becoming one of few players bold enough to pull off the twisting tomahawks mid-game.

If anything, Richardson may still be known for the two 360 dunks he didn’t get to fall: the 360 between the legs, and the 360 elbow dunk.

As a consolation dunk, he did this instead:

Richardson was dethroned the following year by Fred Jones, whose lob-to-self 360 won him the title in 2004, but J-Rich’s mark had been made on dunk history. Carter and Richardson were the pioneers for the new era of basketball players who pull off 360 dunks in-game and in slam dunk contests.
Paul George may have never thought to do a reverse 360 between-the-legs dunk in 2014 had it not been for Richardson’s failed attempt or Carter’s reverse 360.

Since Gervin and Thompson, and Carter and Richardson, NBA players have taken the torch originally lit by their predecessors and doused it in lighter fluid. With new technology has come new ingenuity. Aaron Gordon may have had the best 360 dunk ever after he had the Orlando Magic mascot hold a basketball elevated then rotate counterclockwise before timing the rotation, running to the mascot, palming the ball with one hand, then rotating his body 360 degrees before windmilling it.
It was a shame he lost that slam dunk contest to Zach LaVine, but it made for the best one-on-one dunk showdown arguably in NBA history.

This year, Dennis Smith Jr. continued the tradition, pulling off a never-before-seen (at least not in the dunk contest) reverse 360 between-the-legs dunk. He, and the rest of the competition, went on to lose to Donovan Mitchell, who paid homage to Vince Carter with a reverse 360 windmill.

The 360 will continue to live on, on the court and in dunk contests to come. From George Gervin, to David Thompson, Vince Carter, Jason Richardson and now the young guns Smith Jr. and Mitchell, the legacy rages on. And as long as there is a dunk contest to be had, the tradition will never die.

Here we go, then, for what is surely the tie of the fifth round! It has a bit of everything, this, doesn’t it? Rochdale, bottom of League One, take on a Spurs team that is absolutely flying. There’s been some hustle and bustle about the pitch at Spotland, freshly relaid as it happens, but we’re all set now and Tottenham cannot say they haven’t been warned in their cup run so far.
They came *mighty* close to falling flat at Newport, That Man Harry Kane saving them late on, and it’s hard to see Mauricio Pochettino countenancing a repeat of that performance – where he felt their attitude hadn’t been quite right. Rochdale, managed so astutely by Keith Hill over the years, will pounce on any of that and how the visitors start may be key.
It could be rattling good fun at what you might call a quintessential “lower league” venue. Or it might be done after 20 minutes. Only one way to find out!

Olympic hockey 2018: Schedule, scores, and results for the men’s tournament

The Americans are looking to bring home gold in the first Olympic tournament without NHL players since 1994.
Over 200 players from countries around the world will have a chance to make history when men’s hockey at the 2018 Winter Olympics opens Wednesday. The tournament doesn’t have NHL players for the first time since 1994, which opens the door to a competition where seemingly anything could happen.
The decision by the NHL not to take a break during its season to participate in the Olympics sent shockwaves through the hockey world last year. The discord between the league and the International Olympic Committee forced national teams to turn elsewhere to fill their rosters for Pyeongchang, which gives this event a decidedly different feel from the past two decades.
Gone is the star power that the NHL could bring to the festivities, and in its place is an opportunity for players who probably never dreamed of being here.
That’s disappointing given what a stacked team the U.S. could’ve brought to South Korea, but it also sets the stage for what could be a really special tournament. These players have never played under such high stakes. The intensity, passion, and pride that have always defined Olympic hockey will still be there, even if the talent level isn’t quite the same.
The Russian team, which is officially being called Olympic Athletes from Russia as part of the IOC’s punishment for doping violations, is considered the favorite. The team will be led by former NHL stars Pavel Datsyuk and Ilya Kovalchuk, so it’ll be interesting to see whether any ragtag group can keep up with that.
Team USA is led by former Sabres captain Brian Gionta and a trio of young forwards in Troy Terry (University of Denver), Jordan Greenway (Boston University), and Ryan Donato (Harvard). We’ll see if they can come out of Pyeongchang with a medal.
The gold medal game is set for Sunday, Feb. 25 local time in Pyeongchang, but it’ll actually be Saturday, Feb. 24 in the United States. The schedule below is adjusted for Eastern time and reflects that time difference.
How the tournament works
The tournament starts with the 12 teams divided into three groups of four for the preliminary stage. Canada, Switzerland, South Korea, and the Czech Republic are in Group A. Team USA, Olympic Athletes from Russia, Slovakia, and Slovenia are in Group B. Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Germany are in Group C.
Following the group stage, the teams are seeded from one to 12 for the playoff bracket based on the results. The top four teams automatically advance to the quarterfinals, with the other eight teams playing to fill the other four spots. From there, it’s a standard single-elimination tournament

The lack of a home button means that many of past iPhone’s functions have been remapped to other hardware or software controls on the iPhone X. The ability to force restart the iPhone X is among those. To force restart your iPhone X now you need to press and quickly release the Volume Up button, press and quickly release the Volume Down button, and then press and hold the Side button.

iPhone X Tips: Always Show Notification Previews
A cool feature of the iPhone X is that notifications are automatically hidden and will only display their content if you are looking at the device. This ability means other people who have access to your phone can’t see the details of the notifications you receive on your lock screen. But you can disable this if you want to. To do so, got to Settings > Notifications > Show Previews and choose Always, When Unlocked, or Never.

With no Home button it might seem like you can’t force quit apps anymore–but you can. To do so on the iPhone X you need to bring up the app switcher. Do this by swiping up on the home bar from the bottom of any screen. Once the apps appear, swipe to the one you want to force quit and tap and hold on it. Once the minus sign in the red dot appears either tap the dot or simply swipe up on the app to force quit it.

No, me neither, but don’t despair. Fortunately for me, and you, I’ve MacGyvered my way into the SIM card tray and microSD card slot many a time. Here are a few handy ways to open the SIM card slot without a SIM tool.

What do you have near you?
Earring or piercing
The right tool for the job might be closer than you think, as in right inside your own body. Traditional earrings with thinner wires or hooks work best, on others, you might need to unscrew the ball/spike on the end. More extreme piercings might be too large to serve as SIM tray openers.

Probably the next most common thing if you happen to work in an office. Not the fat plastic coated paperclips, but pretty much any small paper clip will get your SIM tray ejected. And when you’re done you can use it to attach various bits of paper together.

RightEye’s portable eye-tracking test catches concussions and reading problems in five minutes

They say the eyes are the windows to the soul, but physiologically speaking, they’re really windows to the brain.
RightEye looks through that window to detect common but often subtle vision issues resulting from concussions and other brain troubles. Its quick, portable eye-tracking station can tell in minutes whether you should see a doctor — or look into becoming a pro ball player.
It turns out there’s quite a lot you can tell from how someone’s eyes move. We may not notice it ourselves, but we all vary in how and how well we execute a number of basic tasks, from flicking our eyes back and forth to smoothly tracking a moving target. For instance, your eyes may over-correct, fail to line up correctly, or track up or down when moving along a straight line.
For healthy individuals, these variations fall within a safe range, just part of the ordinary differences between bodies. But certain patterns well outside the baseline can be strong indicators of things like concussions and eye muscle problems — and even Parkinson’s and Autism-spectrum conditions.
RightEye tracks these movements with a custom device that looks a bit like an all-in-one desktop; it uses a Tobii eye-tracking module built into a single-purpose computer loaded with a library of simple tests. A basic EyeQ (as they call it) test takes five minutes or so, with more specialized tests adding only a few more, and results are available immediately.
To give you an idea: one test in game form has you defending a space station, destroying incoming ships by looking at them. But certain colored ships you must not destroy — meaning you have to detect them in your peripheral vision and avoid looking at them. In another test, you flick your eyes rapidly between two targets appearing on opposite sides of the screen, demonstrating accuracy and functioning saccades (micro-corrections made by your eye muscles).
Each eye is tracked independently, and their performance as a matched pair is evaluated instantly. An easy-to-understand results sheet shows their actual movements and how (if at all) they deviate from the baseline.
It’s compact and can run on battery for some 8 hours, making it ideal for deployment outside hospitals or the like: anywhere from school nurse’s office to the sidelines of an NFL game, even in the home.

I tested the device out myself at CES (my vision is just OK, but I want a rematch), and later chatted with Barbara Barclay, RIghtEye’s President. The two most exciting applications of the technology, as judged by her enthusiasm anyway, are in identifying vision-related cognitive problems in kids and in creating a sort of eye fitness test for sporting persons.
Say a child is having trouble learning to read, or perhaps can’t pay attention in class. The immediate thought these days is frequently ADD. But it’s more than a little possible that it’s a vision problem. A subtle difference in how the eyes track, perhaps one going off the horizontal when tracking a line of text, could easily make reading on the page or blackboard frustrating or even painful. What 3rd-grade kid would keep at it?

This isn’t some groundbreaking new idea — but reliably and objectively evaluating individual eye movements was only something you could do if you went to see a specialist, perhaps after other explanations for a behavior didn’t pan out. RightEye’s test practically runs itself and can detect or eliminate the possibility of vision problems in minutes. Honestly, I think a kid might even find it fun.
Barclay has personal experience with this, her own daughter having had health issues that only after multiple false starts were found to have their root in a relatively simple vision problem the system indicated.
In 2016, RightEye acquired the rights to a pair of tests based on research linking eye movement patterns to Parkinson’s and Huntington’s diseases, as well as Autism spectrum conditions. It’s not a magic bullet, but again, the quick and easy nature of the tests make them ideal for routine screening.
The Autism spectrum test is for children aged only 1 to 3, and watches eye movements between images of people and images of geometric shapes. Lingering on the shapes more than the people, it turns out, is a good indicator that at the very least the kid should receive further testing.
The Parkinson’s and Huntington’s tests watch for the more well understood patterns that accompany the motor degeneration found in those afflictions. They can be administered to people of any age and have (using earlier eye-tracking setups) contributed to many identifications of the diseases.
On a very different, but perhaps more immediately remunerative, note, Barclay told me that the test also works as a way to find outliers on the other end: people with what amounts to super-vision.
It’s entirely possible that someone could take the test and their results will show that they have faster, more accurate saccades, quicker target acquisition, and better continuous object tracking than the baseline. That’s a heck of an asset to have if you’re batting, fielding, goalkeeping, playing tight end — pretty much anything, really.

It’s also a heck of an asset to have if you’re a scout or coach. If Lopez is catching great on the left side of the field but not the right, you can look into the possibility that he’s having trouble tracking the ball when looking over his left shoulder, his eyes all the way to the right.
Not only that, but you can test for effects of concussions or other traumas right there on the field if they’re having trouble. Given how widespread such injuries are and the immense danger of repeated concussions, testing early and often could literally save lives.
Right now, Barclay told me, 7 MLB teams are using RightEye tech for player assessments. As for the medical side of things, she said the company currently has 200 clients. The new hardware should help boost that number.
Perhaps more importantly, it has the backing (and therefore clout) of VSP, the country’s largest vision insurance company. That’s both a tremendous vote of confidence and a major in — nothing gets people using a system faster than knowing it’s covered by their existing insurance.

Lightweight, splash-resistant, and easily attachable to your backpack, jacket pocket, or standard mounting accessories, OmiCam is the answer to the technological conundrum that a majority of wearable camera manufacturers are facing; sacrificing battery life for modern computing power. Additionally, the company’s proprietary optical motion intelligence leverages horizontal calibration to drastically improve image stabilization, eliminate camera bouncing, and secure proper orientation. Lastly, OmiCam, with its 240° Fisheye lens, is able to capitalize on the fast-growing emergence of VR technology with compatible video format and even live streaming VR capabilities normally reserved for 360° cameras with cumbersome mounting equipment.
For the longest time, the wearable camera market has only been catering to active people involved in shorter-duration activities. The action footage of skiers, skydivers, and surfers has certainly been incredibly popular, but for those that are avid hikers and bicyclists, the technology just doesn’t suit their needs. The battery life is too short, the image is never stable, and, when mounted, it can be difficult to know if the camera was angled correctly or even recording at all. With all this in mind, OmiCam decided to completely rethink the wearable camera and focus on not only the needs of their users, but on creating a viewing experience that sets the device apart from the rest and positions the company as an industry leader.

To achieve the unprecedented 15-hour battery life, the camera has a Lifelog mode that is set up to automatically take 5 seconds of video every 3 minutes. This break in recording allows users to still capture their adventure, and extend the battery life past any other wearable on the market.
When not in Lifelog mode, the camera has a similar battery life of other wearable cameras; around 70-80 minutes.
Plenty of Storage

OmiCam uses a removable MicroSD so storage can be as large as the SD card you insert. Since the camera  instantly delivers footage to the Omi Studio app on your smartphone, storage space is never a concern.
AI Integration and Video Editing

The Omi Studio app, which is available for both iOS and Android devices, has a Smart-Pick feature that uses AI software to generate a 1-minute highlight video of the top collected footage. While in the app, users can also view, edit, share and live stream VR-compatible footage to social networks that can instantly be viewed on all major VR headsets.
